Jacob Stever Showalter, lovingly known as Jake, went home to be with his Lord and Savior December 3rd, 2024, at the age of 90. He passed peacefully at his home under hospice care in Spokane. Born in Lewiston, Idaho, Jacob graduated from Kennewick High School and led a life rich in faith, love, service, and dedication.
Jacob is survived by his devoted wife Katherine L. Showalter and a large, loving family: children from his first marriage, Kathryn Holm, and her children, Cassandra Holm Amato, Ryan, and Dustin Holm; Jan Jacobs Wright and her children, Leslie and Eric Jones; Michael Showalter; and Lisa Miller and her children, Kimberly Miller Henry and Tawny Miller Losey. He is also survived by nephews who were like sons to him—Wayne, Phillip, and Leroy Olson and Leroy’s children, Eli, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Israel Olson. Jacob’s siblings Margaret Cook, Gladys Hill, and Janie Thon also survive him, along with numerous nieces and nephews and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Nancy and Ralph Showalter; siblings John Showalter, Marjorie Olson, Nancy Burke, and Wilma Tindall; and his son, Patrick Showalter.
Jacob worked for 36 years as a journeyman clerk at Safeway, where he was known for his reliability and strong work ethic. He took breaks from his career to serve his country in the Air Force during the Korean War and to work at Hanford. After retiring from Safeway, Jacob worked an additional 10 years as a dedicated groundskeeper for the Nine Mile School District.
Jacob enjoyed life to the fullest. His unshakeable faith led him to open his heart and home to numerous foster children and adults who needed a hand up. His favorite pastimes included fishing, shooting, camping, and spending quality time with his family. Known for his friendliness, sense of humor, and kindness, Jacob made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
A memorial service to celebrate Jacob’s life will be held on Saturday, January 4th, 2025, at 12 noon, at Spokane First, Shadle Campus, 5610 North Ash Street, Spokane, Washington.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests charitable contributions in memory of Jacob Showalter be made to Brain Support Network, Post Office Box 7264, Manitou Park, CA 94026, or online at www.-BrainSupportNetwork.org. Donations made before December 30th will be matched.
Jacob’s legacy of faith, love, laughter, and kindness will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
