SHBA - What to do When Spokane Gets Windy

WHAT TO DO WHEN SPOKANE GETS WINDY?

Sunday’s windstorm was a wonderful reminder that living in Eastern WA is not always blue skies and butterflies. As residents, we know that it is frequently windy, and have experience taking the necessary precautions to protect our homes and ourselves. Although we may be aware, when that tree branch finally does come crashing through your roof, panic can oftentimes get the best of us. That is why a little refresher could potentially save your home, and your families.

During a severe windstorm – as Spokanites we can recognize the difference between some strong gusts, and the powerful ones that will knock down powerlines – the best thing to do is hunker down inside your home. Take this opportunity to turn off your gas appliances and pick out a room inside that doesn’t have too many windows. Even if your power does go out during the windstorm, do NOT use your backup generator at this time.

After the storm, take inventory of your property. Listen for the hissing sounds of a broken gas line, and smell around for gas. If you do find you have a gas leak, open your windows, leave the building, and call the gas company. Once you are outside, be mindful of downed power lines. If you are able, take this time to help your neighbors if they are in need, especially those with mobility problems.

Eastern Washington is a beautiful region with a wide variety of natural phenomena; this offers a little bit of everything for all of our residents. A major downside of this though, is that we have to be prepared for all manner of incidents. Luckily, we are resilient in the face of all adversities, and if in the end something does happen to us that we cannot deal with ourselves, we can call upon the hundreds of experts in the region to assist us.
