It’s that time of year again when the sun is bright, the lake is inviting, and... your ballot arrives in your mailbox. It’s no surprise that most people aren’t thinking about politics at the end of July and the data shows it: over the past four years, only one-third of voters participated in the Primary Elections. With all of the tumult of 2020, people are paying more attention to politics both due to its prominence and the lack of other activities, but voter turnout will still likely be under 50%. Meaning your vote in the primary means even more, so let’s look at how you can participate.
Check on Your Ballot
Have you received your ballot to vote in this year’s primary election? Voters all over the state were mailed ballots the end of last week, so if you didn’t receive yours, be sure to check your voter status at www.votewa.gov. If you’re not registered to vote, there’s still time to do that too.
Research the Candidates
To start, check out the Online Voters’ Guide (found at spokanecounty.org/elections) which contains candidate-submitted content. This information is submitted weeks before the election, so the candidates’ websites will contain the most up-to-date information on endorsements and positions on issues.
The Board of Directors of the Spokane Home Builders Association has also evaluated numerous candidates based on their qualifications, viability, and support of the building industry. You can see a full list of SHBA endorsed candidates below.
