A strong economy and low inventory of homes on the market has driven up the demand for major home renovations. The Spokane Home Builders Association’s Education Department provides members and non-members with classes that will keep you in compliance with state and federal regulations for registered contractors.

As the presence of EPA inspections in our area increases, it is in your best interest to invest in the classes now to avoid getting hit with costly fines. “I would rather companies get into compliance before they start the work than come across them in the field and have to issue a citation,” says Jennifer Caraway, Compliance and Enforcement Officer for Eastern Washington.

EPA Certified Lead Renovator for Renovation, Repair and Painting, INITIAL TRAINING
Tuesday, October 10, 2019 • 8am – 5pm

$295 for SHBA Members and Non-Members. Includes Course Material and Lunch. Avoid fines of up to $37,500 or more for each violation.

Does your business involve the renovation, repair or painting of structures built before 1978? Under the United States Environmental Protection Agencies Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Program, construction firms must apply for and receive EPA Certification to disturb paint as part of their work in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities. In addition, all of these jobs must be supervised by Certified Renovators; specifically, individuals who have completed an EPA-accredited, full-day training course. The training course is required for any contractor that is involved in any activity that will - or has the potential to - disturb six square feet of lead-based paint in a room or 20 square feet on the exterior. The rule does not apply to minor maintenance or repair activities; however window replacement is not considered minor maintenance or repair.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THE CLASS?
Home Improvement/Renovation Contractors, Remodelers/Carpenters,
Painters, Plumbers, Electricians, Maintenance Personnel, Residential Property Managers/Owners, Workers Removing or Modifying Painted Surfaces, Anyone disturbing more than 6 sq. ft. (interior) & 20 sq. ft. (exterior) of lead paint.

EPA Certified Lead Renovator for Renovation, Repair and Painting , REFRESHER TRAINING
Tuesday, October 10, 2019 • 8am – 2pm

$195 for SHBA Members and Non-Members. Includes Course Material and Morning Snacks. If  you miss your deadline to recertify, you will be required to repeat the initial Certified Renovator Course.

This 6-hours refresher training is required every 5 years to be in compliance with the United States Environmental Protection Agencies Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Program.

THE TRAINING FOCUSES ON:
Regulations, Testing for Lead-Based Paint, Review of Set-Up Practices, Review of Prohibited Practices, Personal Protective Equipment and Dust Control, Cleaning Activities and Checking Your Work, Recordkeeping, Training of Non-Certified Renovators, Asbestos and Silica Training

Asbestos
Do you remodel homes built before 1980? If so, you must provide annual asbestos awareness training to all employees who work where potential asbestos is present.

Silica
Do you work with cement, bricks, stone, Hardieplank or similar materials? Washington State started enforcing the WAC 296-840 Silica Rule in April 2018. You must now adopt specific engineering practices and provide training for employees if they work with materials that can create silica dust.

Saws, grinds, sands, finishes or installs natural or engineered stone materials, Dry sweeps dusty floors, Uses compressed air to clean dusty equipment, clothing and other surfaces, Concrete workers, stone masons, natural stone countertop installers
