SHBA - Planning Yard & Garden Project?

Planning yard & Garden Project?

With Summer rapidly approaching, it would be best to get a head start on any yard renovations that you have been dreaming about. It can often times seem daunting to undertake landscaping changes to your home, but with proper planning and the right resources, it does not have to be. Starting this process now will cut down on the hours you will be spending in the scorching August sun.

Like any project, landscaping your yard will require a plan. This can be as simple as knowing what you want to add or change about your lawn. Take a look around your own neighborhood; take note of what your neighbors have been doing. This can give you a great idea of what you want your own yard to look like (or not look like). Take this time to discuss with your family about what the future of your home is going to be. Are you planning on having more children join your family? Are you planning on downsizing your home in the near future? These are just some examples of future plans that may influence what kind of greenspace you want to create.

There are also some other details that are important to keep in mind. Do you live in an area with a restrictive HOA? Changing weather patterns, as well as increasing utilities costs, could impact any irrigation or water fixtures you are considering. Are you going to need to remove any low hanging branches or entire trees to make way for that fire pit? None of these should be overtly challenging tasks that keep you up at night, just all things that are best to iron out before the digging begins.

Speaking of digging… This might be the hardest question of them all: Can you do this work yourself, or do you need to hire a pro? It is one thing to plan out your dream garden on paper; with the extensive drip lines, raised flower beds, and concrete retaining wall. It is an entire other process to actually execute the plan. If you decide to do the work yourself, then it should just be a matter of sticking to the already well laid out plan that you spent so much time perfecting. The last bit of advice I will leave with you DIY-ers is to call 811 before you dig. There is a vast network of pipes and wires running beneath our feet, and one wrong move can sever entire neighborhoods from access to these vital functions. Always call before you dig!

For those of you who may feel uneasy or unequipped to take on a project of this magnitude, hire a professional. At the Spokane Home Builders Association, we have an entire directory of trusted builders, contractors, landscapers, and basically every other type of skilled worker that you can think of at your disposal. All you need to do is visit our website and begin your search today.
